What is Pilates?

  • Pilates is a method of exercise that consists of low-impact flexibility, muscular strength & endurance movements. Pilates emphasizes proper postural alignment, core strength & muscle balance. Pilates is named for its creator, Joseph Pilates, who developed the exercises in the 1920s.
  • The health benefits of Pilates include: improved flexibility. increased muscle strength & tone, particularly of  your  'core muscles' (abdominal muscles, lower back, hips and buttocks)
  • There are Five Basic Principles that provide the foundation of STOTT PILATES® and are key to performing the exercises safely & effectively. They show you how to breathe properly & position your body through the exercises. 
  • These principles will make you more aware of your ‘core’ and help you get better results from your workout:
